Again, to clarify: Larry Hodges (a real person) is maybe a bit above 2200 w/ inverted, ~2200 w/ hardbat, ~2100 with clipboard. Also, it's not as if he actually practices clipboard for serious play, it's just something he dicks around with on the side to mock people. I've never meet Larry, but were a bunch of other folks who got in on the joke around then and pulled off similar feats (beat someone with a clipboard is pretty damn surprising and humiliating as evident from this thread), so it's hardly just him.
Just look at how ridiculous this discussion is: first it's only "lower level" players, then it's <2000 (where vast majority of amateurs are, btw), then it'll be <2500 (you know, not "real pros"). It's like at some point people wishfully think it'll magically start being about the equipment and not everything else in the sport that has nothing to do with the racket.
I'm sure after this conclusive episode about rackets the same people will move on to claiming some degree of inheriting Ma Long footwork if you buy CNT shoes.

before ma long became pro team sponsored, he had to have used 'regular equipment', so no way he'd lose to 2200. that's the avg min rating for entering china provincial pro teams. at 2900+, he'd beat even 2700 with "off the shelf" easily. but 2500's often say they can substitute anything with a flat, solid, striking surface and be ~1800, but they're not going to beat 2000's that way. so there's a limit to what you can sub for. |
