You can argue the speed aspect I guess. I know many of my hardbat friends do. And frankly, I do think that the equipment used is a factor that matters. But I don't think it is the main factor or even perhaps a major one.
You really don't need much of a spectacle for your sport if you have a large, interested, base with a significant level of direct or indirect participation. Golf, is a rather unspectactular and low action sport that takes an agonizingly long time to play. Yet it has an entire TV channel all its own. Why? Well, it has about 30 million golfers in the country (about half of whom play 8-24 rounds of golf a year) and 15,000 golf courses.
