It is possible for your strokes to be very good, since for many players that is all they practice, yet lose to players who's strokes are ugly. Match play and strategy are important parts of the game in addition to correct high quality strokes. Playing someone who only does basic drills, or who's training is mostly on a robot will show the weaknesses in these approaches. Balls placement and pace changes usually are a problem for this type of player, since they don't practice against this.
I have played a few players with unusually strong backhands and weak forehands (due to the fact that they use a basement grip on the racket), yet manage to beat players with much better strokes, correct grips and better footwork. Their rating were 1800 to 2000+, wonder how good they could have been with some good coaching when they were learning the game.
